affiliate ad overload

cramming your sidebars full with as many affiliate ads as possible is not going to earn you more commission – in fact, it may earn less: if there’s one thing I hear from newer bloggers, it’s that their affiliate ads aren’t really earning them much money.

here’s why I think this is true:

affiliate ads make you look just like everyone else. you don’t think your visitors ONLY visit your site, do you? We all have the same affiliates, and they’re all well-known online boutiques or brands – there’s nothing interesting there, unless you can get an exclusive code for your website and have some graphics created for you.

how to do advertising:

  • start first with google ads. they’re always different and mostly relevant and can be a decent source of revenue in the beginning, especially as you start getting more consistent traffic. My google ads earned me hundreds of dollars a month in the beginning…now, not so much.
  • let your first advertiser come to you. this is how I got started with advertising on my site and it took off from there. Give boutiques/designers TONS of free traffic, and they’ll come to you. Yeah, they’re already getting free traffic, but most also know the value of the consistent traffic advertising can bring. Once you get your first paying advertiser, other boutiques will start knocking on your door.
  • make your first paying advertisers feel special…don’t surround them with affiliate ads to fill up space. if you’re doing it right, you won’t have empty space for long.
  • In my opinion, advertising (any advertising) isn’t very effective until you have regular visitors (not just your sister) who trust and value your opinions and lots of valuable content. Don’t start a blog just to make money (please). Start a blog because you’re passionate about the subject. The money will follow. I promise.

what are your experiences? what do you think?

Those are some great points. It’s so important to differentiate oneself. And great advice about not doing it for the money. I think many people see the super popular blogs and think it can be very lucrative. But there are just a ridiculous number of blogs out there and many people writing about the same stuff or rambling on and on and on. :)
