Q1 Blues…

ugh. the first quarter is always the worst for affiliate earnings – I’m going to make about 1/4 of the affiliate commissions I made in November 2008 this month. And for all of Q1, I’ll make about 1/3 of what I made in Q4 2008. It’s always this way though, you’d think I’d be used to it. This year is no worse than last year, but compared to the spending sprees of the last half of 2008, it’s dismal.

part of the reason is fewer huge promotions & sales from affiliates, but the main reason is the after-holiday slump. people take stock of their spending over the holidays and usually decide to cut back…for a while anyway…spending picks up again in April & May, slumps again during the Summer months, and then goes hot & heavy from October to the end of the year.

I mention this because no matter how well I am familiar with the Q1 slump, I’m never quite as prepared as I should be for it. I should have saved more money so it won’t be so tough paying bills for a couple of months, but I’ll be okay. if you’re new to affiliate sales, just keep in mind how cyclical retail sales are and work on other sources of income or increased advertising revenue in addition to saving any “extra” money when times are good.

have you experienced this? what do you do to make sure you can pay bills when the money’s not flowing?
