video blog: do you video blog?

by grechen on March 15, 2010 | RSS | FOLLOW ON TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I realize I’m way behind the times; bloggers have been using video prolifically for a while now, but I’ve really never been interested – either in recording videos for my blogs, or in watching them. Recently, though, I’ve felt the desire to reach out to my visitors in a more “personal” way – if that makes sense. I mean, I’m already very personal in all of my blog posts, but I feel like video brings it to a new level.

Now, watch the video :) and tell me what you think!

Do you record video posts on your blog? How often?
Do you watch videos on other blogs? or do you prefer reading text?

do you video blog?

I’m getting ready to launch a video blog because I think you can really take blogging to a whole new level with video. Writing is my first love, so I’ll never give up on that completely–but I am really interested in finding more effective ways to get my message out there.

I totally support you doing a video blog and will be a faithful viewer! :-)

Hi Gretchen! Loved watching your video and getting to see you. I think videos do make things feel more personal and give visitors a better sense of the blogger.

Having been a TV news reporter, it only made sense for me to use my skills to make some videos for blogs. I shoot makeup lesson videos with expert makeup artists. Certainly makeup videos have become hugely popular, because it’s very helpful to see how something is done instead of just reading about it.

I only shoot videos here and there, because mine require a lot of time and effort between the visit to the makeup artist and editing (editing can take several hours). I haven’t done much with shooting myself doing my makeup, because there are already so many women doing that. I try to offer people something that they don’t see much elsewhere. But I have gotten some requests to shoot my own makeup lessons so I may do that if I can just find the time. :)

sonja, i ALWAYS love your videos!! although i’m still a klutz with makeup…
i really think that on some blogs – like yours – video just makes sense, and i don’t think they can be as successful without it. but on others, like mine, it’s more of a stretch, so it’s a matter of finding where video might fit, and trying to make it work.

(i would love to see you shoot your own makeup lessons – when you can find the time ;) )

i should do more videos, most of mine look like they were shot by drunk people, and i always sound drunk, and get those comments. sheesh.

but i’ve been thinking to try harder at vids…now just what would be interesting enough to talk about??

i totally think you should do more videos!! i’d be interested to know more about what you “think” about when you’re planning outfits? what’s your inspiration behind them?
but you could ask your visitors what they’d be interested in seeing via video – i’m sure you’d get a lot of input ;)

I don’t do vlog posts, yet, because I’m considering what format and direction to take it. Though I watch some vlog posts, I think they’re fun, but sometimes, people go on tangents and it takes too long to get to the point…if they had one in the first place. Sometimes, I feel that reading text takes up less time than watching a vlog, but that’s probably a difference in media. Good post! =)

LOL, i read that and then thought about the tangents that i’ve gone on in some video posts…you’re absolutely right, part of the reason i like doing video posts is that i don’t edit them, they’re free form, or stream of consciousness. and sometimes easier to do than regular posts…but i do agree that reading takes much less time, and definitely gets to the point faster. video blogs have their place, just not as a substitute for written posts, IMO

I read very quickly, so I can zip through a written post and move on to the next thing in my blogroll in about half the time it takes for me to listen to somebody vlog it. Plus, I usually surf with the sound off, or on breaks from work, and in either of those cases, I’m far more likely to move on than to bother with watching a video blog. I find vlogs more of a hindrance and annoyance than an enhancement.

that’s normally the way i approach video blogs too – but lately, i’ve been giving more videos a chance. if i get bored or think it’s pointless, i’ll just stop watching, but i’m more interested in watching videos than i used to be.

We just posted our first video, a fun musical montage of fashion week, and are looking forward to doing more but the content has to be right. Don’t think we need another “how to tie a scarf” video. We like the idea of dressing women for events and
talking to designers about their collections. Here’s our post: http://www.what2wearwhere.com/blog/post/2010/03/15/Fall-Fashion-2010.aspx

I just got a Flip and have started doing vlogs. I think its a great way for the reader to engage with the ‘real’ you and humanises the blogger. I haven’t done too many vlogs but I’m hoping to do more. I become too critical of myself and keep re-recording until its right! I do agree that it takes more time for the reader to watch a video than to skim through text so I wouldn’t want to overload my blog with videos because of this.

Ashling.
I agree and what is perfect? Is your first recording any better that the last?
