who buys? twitter followers or facebook fans?

In spite of the shortcomings of this study, it’s still interesting to note the results: that 67% of twitter followers are more likely to buy after following a brand, and 79% of twitter followers are more likely to recommend a brand after following (compared to 51% and 60% of facebook fans):

The problem with the study is that it doesn’t take into account the fact that most people are inclined to follow/fan a brand they’re ALREADY likely to buy from, or have bought from, so the results will inevitably lean the way they do. I’m certain there are a significant amount of new followers/fans a brand attracts by it’s presence on twitter/facebook, and not only current customers, but that’s a different, and more difficult study. Nevertheless, the results are telling – especially that it appears that twitter users are more likely to buy/recommend than facebook fans.

I believe this follows from my own VERY INFORMAL observations and personal preference of twitter over facebook; twitter encourages faster, more personal interaction, and therefore stimulates more loyalty and purchases. Like I said, this has been my opinion for some time, but it appears to be somewhat substantiated with this study.

Anyway, I just found this interesting – but I don’t think it proves anything specific, or should necessarily dictate any social media strategy. What do you think?

it makes sense to me too that twitter would come out ahead. sometimes i can’t even tell (on facebook) if our fans like our content. we struggle with getting our fans to engage with us and sometimes wonder if it has to do with a social media “learning curve”. people on twitter are use to RTing & engaging often with people & brands, whereas (some) people on FB are newer to the social media arena and although they read the content are wary to comment, share, or click through.

great point, nicole! twitter users are much more engaged IMO – and you can really tell if your followers like what you post, and if they don’t, by the retweets and click through stats…

I don’t tweet but I am setting up my own company soon and I know the importance of having a Twitter account as well as Facebook. Especially if your target market is aged 15 – 25 which mine is!

Good blog! xoxo
