Outfit posts: everyday? or just when you look good?

I’ve been posting outfits online since 2004 on Grechen’s Closet. Not every single outfit every single day – just the ones I felt were post-worthy, or featuring something interesting. I never set out for Grechen’s Closet to be strictly a place where I posted outfits; it was a shopping & fashion magazine, with a designer directory, coupon codes, “where to buy” section and lots more, including outfit posts. Over the years, though, the outfits posts became a favorite on the website, and when I stop posting for a while, my visitors notice.

And while I mostly only post outfits I think reflect “the best me,” and more “dressed-up” shots, I don’t shy away from posting the outfits I walk the dog in, or wear around the house. Grechen’s Closet is all me, and I try to show all sides. It’s not easy to do this all the time, especially now, when I’m not feeling that great about the changes I have put my body through (moving stress + great restaurants in Austin = lots of extra lbs.), but I’ve started posting outfit pictures again, and my readers appreciate that I do.

Anyway, I feel like it’s a discussion lately in the blogosphere whether or not bloggers should post outfits every day – of everything, not just “perfect” outfits – or just post their “best” looks. Ultimately, it’s up to the blogger of course, but I think a variety of outfits/looks is nice and really shows more of the whole person, not just the side she wants to show.

My sister and I were talking about this yesterday on our 8-hour car trip to Florida together…she is a mommy-blogger and wants to start talking more about fashion & style to work on creating better looks for herself, but she’s not sure people want to see everything; the good, the bad, and the ugly. I told her that people DO want to see all that, and then challenged her to post our “car” outfits at the end of the day. Which we did.

What do you think? as a blogger do you feel comfortable posting your “everyday” outfits, or do you just post your “dressed-up” outfits? Do you post your REAL outfits? or do you sometimes change after you snap a picture? Do you “exaggerate” your outfits just for pictures? Do you believe you have to post everyday? Or do you only post when you have something interesting to wear? as a blog reader, do you like to see more of a variety of outfits? or are you disappointed when the blogger doesn’t stick strictly to the type of style you’re used to seeing?

I don’t post every outfit I wear every single day. I often change a few times in a day because of different activities. I also often wear the same thing many days in a row for the same type of activity. I tend to post an outfit when it seems worth posting because I was going somewhere worth dressing nicely for… unlike walking Speck (although I do post dog walk outfits occasionally).

Once or twice I’ve switched shoes after snapping an outfit photo because of rain or realizing the impracticality of my original choice. But so often I photograph my outfits after I get home, so what you see is usually what I wore. I will say that I post outfits on delays. I rarely have time to upload and post before leaving for something so typically it was a previous outing’s outfit.

I do a lot more back to back repeats than I’d care to admit. I don’t post those (but I do sometimes say if I wore something more than one day in a row). Also, at least once/ week I don’t change out of my PJ’s or gym clothes. I don’t post on those days, either!

I post every other day or every two, depending on what’s going on in my day to day life. In the beginning I would post outfits pretty much everyday, but with my husband’s schedule (my photog), we discovered that everyday was too difficult for him to fit in. I agree with the comment above – on the off days, I usually just do repeats or wear things I am not sure would translate well on the blog. : )

I’ll admit though, I do prefer following bloggers who post outfit shots pretty frequently.

Great post!

Great post! I try to post a fair balance of dressed up and casual photos on my blog. If I’m in my PJs all day or wearing something that is too similar to a previous post I won’t take pictures. I have somewhat of a uniform that I have to wear to work, so I don’t usually post when I’m in work clothes either unless I’m wearing a new skirt or interesting accessory to work.

I hardly ever post outfit photos on my blog. I’m usually not comfortable enough with my body to do so, and I don’t particularly feel like my outfits are interesting enough to warrant posting. My first and last outfit photo was posted a few weeks ago… Since then, I’ve thought about posting more but, again, I don’t feel like my outfits or interesting enough, or I’ve just thrown something on in a hurry to get to work, or I’m feeling ugly/fat/yucky. Also? I have no idea how I’m going to take these photos by myself and I feel awkward asking Mr. Pintucked to help. I know I shouldn’t but I do.

I have been posting every day, mostly, because my goal is to improve my overall utilization of my clothes hoard, and so I really want to keep track of what I’m using. That said, I don’t post daily exercise wear or the ugly cargo shorts I am lounging around in on a non going out Sunday.
